hi everybody,
I found a topic in this forum about PLAB and I saw that u don't know so much about it so I can really help u about the PLAB cuz I've been in the U.K. (England) last holiday.........(it will b long but helpful )
PLAB is a test by passing it u can acquire a certificate that is EQUIVALENT to the MBChB (Bachelor in Medicine and Surgery) from any UK University (UK=Britain=United Kingdom of great Britain And Northern Ireland). The Difference between PLAB and ordinary MBChB from any UK University is that the MBChB is taken from that specific university example: Manchester,Oxford,Cambridge.....while the PLAB is taken from the General Medical Council (na8abat al2a6ibba2 in Britain).........
ANYWAY I will write down all the steps that u have 2 do 2 have a high degree in Medicine in Britain after completing your primary Medical study in Iraq from A-Z:
(my uncle who lives in England have done it so be sure I'm not lying)

1-U must have completed your MBChB degree in any medical college all over the world that is RECOGNIZED (mu3taraf biha)by THE W.H.O. (World Health Organization) (note: all medical colleges in Iraq are RECOGNIZED by the W.H.O except KARBALAA medical college cuz it's newly opened ) u can check the list of all recognized medical colleges in the WORLD in the W.H.O official site

2-U must get a student VISA 2 the UK or u get (i8ama) in the UK in anyway (lijoo2, VISA..etc)

3-u must have a 6/9 or more in the IELTS (international english language testing system) which is a language test just like TOEFL but IELTS is more more popular in Britain than TOEFLE which is American.
It consists of four MODULES (speaking/listening/reading/writing) u must get a minimum of 5/9 in each module and an average of 6/9 or more.
*note: IELTS is considered the hardest test in your long way cuz even English students cannot get such a degree

3-take the PLAB consists of 3 parts (theoritical, oral, and CLINICAL)
*theoritical(نظري) including all medical related subject from anatomy and histology till surgery, gyancology, and other medical specialities
*oral (شفهي) in an interview with doctors
*clinical (سريري) in hospitals
*u have 2 pass them all in the same try

4-now u have the PLAB certificate which means u have an equivalent 2 the MBChB from any UK college.
*note:my uncle have done IELTS 9 times till he succeeded while in 3 tries he passed the PLAB

5-Now u r still not a full charged doctor that means u cannot open your own clinic (even for a UK graduate) cuz in the British system u have 2 practice Medicine in a job for a minimum of 6 months...

6-now apply 4 a job and let it be know that hospitals give priority 2 UK graduates more than PLAB takers............

7-complete your 6 months job (as an intern مطبق) not a resident مقيم(and also receive your first payments)

8-Now u r a full charged doctor and that means that
a)u r able 2 work in any place in the UK (and also in any country in the world except USA,CANADA,NEW ZEALAND as I remember)
u r now a member of the GENERAL MEDICAL COUNCIL (na8abat ala6ibba2 in Britain)

9-now u r the king of the world all the doors are opened al colleges welcome you and u will be in your way 2 be rich

10-now u can specialize in the اختصاص u want(u can take a diploma degree) BUT
still cannot do the MRCP(membership in the royal college of physicains) or FRCS(followship in the royal college of surgeons) tests
FRCS and MRCP are equivalent 2(DICTOORA) and it means that if u PASS them u r one of the greatest doctors in the world (the salary for an MRCP or FRCS holders is about 15000 $ a month in UK)
*note: most of our college professors are MRCP or FRCS holders
*Dr.Hikmat Alshaarbaf (our Dean) has an FRCP in Cardiology but from USA
*in Iraq the equivalents of MRCP and FRCS ---> are MICP and FICS (changing ROYAL into IRAQI)

11-to take the MRCP,FRCS u must complete التدرج الوظيفي first (like we have مقيم مقيم اقدم they have JUNIOR RESIDENT--->SENIOR--->SENIOR HOUSE OFFICER
it may take no more than 1-1.5 years

13-then u apply 2 the FRCS or MRCP and they consist of
***primary part:(4 MRCP it includes basic clinical sciences 4 FRCS it includes ANATOMY, PATHOLOGY,.. and others)
***secondary (for advanced medical sciences)
secondary consists of THEORITICAL/ORAL/CLINICAL
u have 2 pass that all at the same try

14-after completing it u r welcomed in any place in the world (infact they will run after u)

15-if u like 2 stay in the UK u will get so much money and in some years you will become a CONSULTANT which is the higher medical degree in Britain (only about 200 consultants are there in the UK now)

16-as an average the whole process (till completing the MRCP or FRCS) can be done in 3-3.5 years if u pass all exams from the first time or it may last longer

17-COSTS
IELTS 400$ each time
PLAB 1500-2000$ each time
MRCP or FRCS I don't know maybe about 2000$

18-u can retake any exam u fail in as many times as u want but u must have the money 4 that

I hope I helped you 2 understand this though i made very hard but I just wanna give u all the details......

i don't know much about USMLE but it is a similar form for USA u can do it in USA or in an American University (such us in Beirut)
****last note: American doctors can work in Britain but brititsh graguated doctors have 2 do some tests 2 work in America
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
if u have any question about the medical system or how 2 go 2 a medical college in Britain u can ask me..

YOURS Muhammed hatem ................2nd grade

Thanks alot Mohammed for those info, but I have some notes:

FRCS stands for Fellow of Royal College of Surgeons (which is not there anymore, they changed it to MRCS which is Member of....)
MRCP stands for Member of Royal College of Physicans
They ARE NOT equivelant to Ph.D degree, the BOARD exam is the equivelant to the Ph.D

in Iraq we have the board degree which is (Fellow of Iraqi Council of Medical Specialities) ( F.I.C.M.S ) which is equivelant to Ph.D.

Anywhere in the world getting a board is the highest thing, like in USA an american board is the highest degree, while in UK they have the MRCS & MRCP along with the-so-hard-to-get-board.

FRCP stands for Fellow of Royal College of Physicians (which is higher than member of....) and it's ROYAL -> UK (not american AT ALL, USA is a republic not a kingdom and thus has no royal college).

hi everybody,
dear Kadhim thx for your corrections though I have some notes

1-there is no board exam in BRITAIN and u can make sure of it cuz after completing MRCP or FRCS (as u say MRCS) the only higher degree left is the CONSULTANT and I'm sure about that (that's about Britain not USA) and as I told u I was there last summer..

2-When I said in USA there is FRCP (like 4 Dr.Hikmat Alshaarbaf) I depended on OUR COLLEGE DALEEL which was published not a long time ago in this year when they were mentioning the staff of our college they wrote the degree of each Dr. besides his name and 4 Dr.Hikmat they wrote FRCP USA so read it and make sure

3-Anyway anything you say about USA u r right cuz as I said i don't know so much about it (at least I know it is a Republic not a Kingdom since I was 6 years old bcmf/thmbup.gif ) so plz plz kadhim I will be very grateful if you tell us about USA and how 2 complete your Medical education there if u know bro.

thx 4 notes........and 4 managing this gr8 site

hi everybody,
dear Ali-Alkhafaji
2 get 2 the UK right now u have 2 :
1-apply 4 a student visa in any British embassy (usually Iraqis apply in Amman-Jordan)
2-When u got there u can't continue form your grade now (I don't know what grade u r now) u have 2 apply 2 medical colleges again they won't consider your study in Baghdad Medical School but it will be considered something that stands 4 u when u apply 4 medical school there
3-u have either 2 take the A-LEVEL exam (high school Baccalurate equivalent there) or do a premedical course

4-apply 4 college

5-start studying from the 1st grade (the MBChB course there lasts 5 year not 6)

so dear I don't think u want 2 loose the years u passed here in baghdad so the best way 4 u is 2 take your MBChB here and then go there do the PLAB and .........

happy 2 help you all (W ANEE ALMAMNOON)

QUOTE
As physicians progress through their career, they firstly become Members of the RCP by passing our main two-part Membership examination. They complete the exam while they are training to be a physician and this allows them to add the letters MRCP after their name. Later on in their career, after they have been a consultant for a few years, physicians may be eligible to become a Fellow of the College. There is no exam procedure for this, Fellows must be elected by other physicians who consider that they are eligible, having sufficiently distinguished themselves in the practice of medicine, medical science or medical literature.

Fellowship of the College gives a number of privileges and responsibilities. Fellows vote to decide on important College issues, such as the election of the President, but also help the College to fulfil its wider aims and purposes in the provision of modern healthcare. Fellows replace the letters MRCP with the letters FRCP, and pay a subscription to the College.

Thanks for the energy hamoodi, keep up the good work bcmf/thmbup.gif
